Why Running: During the serious economic times all levels of government are facing, experience in how to handle difficult issues in county government is a key to success. LaRue County is one of very few in Kentucky that have not had to implement a new taxing district or implement an Insurance Premium or Occupational Tax (around us they include: Breckinridge-Insurance Prem. Tax, Meade-Ins. Prem. Tax, Jefferson- Ins. Prem. Tax, Bullitt-Ins. Prem. Tax, Spencer-Occup. Tax, Washington-Ins. Prem. Tax & Occ. Tax, Marion-Ins. Prem. Tax, Taylor-Ins. Prem. Tax, Green-Ambulance Dist. Tax, Hart-Ambulance Dist. Tax & Occ. Tax, Grayson-Occ. Tax, LaRue County- NONE. We’ll continue to manage within our means while making improvements in our community.

Top Issue Beliefs: I’ve been very fortunate to have been involved with numerous activities on a local, regional and state level that have offered me the opportunity to build relationships and gain in depth knowledge of local, state and federal government operations and how partnerships can be forged that improves LaRue County. I’m proud of the success we’ve had at improving county infrastructure (roads, bridges, public water lines, industrial sites, etc). We’ve also made tremendous progress at enhancing our tourism activities, beautifying our community, enlarging our local Lincoln Heritage (addition of Lincoln Boyhood Home to National Park Service, Lincoln Museum, Boy Lincoln Statue, etc.) and making improvements that make LaRue County a better place to live.

Fiscal management and job creation are areas we have to continue to concentrate on. We have had several clients show interest in the facility owned by CMH Manufacturing in the Industrial Park. We’ll continue to double the effort to see a business or industry locate there that will offer numerous good paying jobs for our community. We’ll continue to work with local businesses and community establishments in any way possible to enhance and make them stronger and LaRue County better.

I don’t believe the staus quo always applies.

Magistrate District 3
Debbie Atherton Republican

Profession: Substitute Teacher/Healthcare

Family: Family is the most important thing in my life. Being a working mother of three boys, multitasking is an established trait. My main focus is on issues that will ultimately benefit the family unit.

Organizations: KTS, AAMA, National Honor Society, International Poets Society,

Experience: Being a substitute teacher I see firsthand the many issues that affect our community. It is my desire to change these issues. I possess strong decision making and communication skills. I have good judgment. And I’m committed to making this community a better place. I am a reliable team player. It is my desire for all of District 3 to come together as a team. Together we can accomplish anything.

Why Running: I am running because I have a strong sense of values. I am fair and I have clear boundaries as to what is right and wrong for everyone in our community. It is my goal to see District 3 be put on the map. It is time that we are recognized as a strong individual community that plays an active and productive role in LaRue County. That is why we need a new voice in county government - A voice with a vision for the future. For instance, I hope to work with the county government to establish a nonprofit humane society in LaRue County.

Top Issue Beliefs: I believe that magistrates need to get out into the community more than they have done in the past. If the community is to have greater confidence in us, then they must have more opportunities to discuss issues and concerns with us. I would love to see more community initiatives such as ‘Magistrates in the Community’ whereby magistrates visit schools to explain our part in the county government and judicial system.

Why Running: My parents instilled in me a desire to work hard, make a difference in my community and help others. That is what I feel I am accomplishing while serving our county as magistrate. Being a magistrate enables me to fulfill these desires by seeing that the citizens of LaRue County are provided the best services that the county can afford.

Top Issue Beliefs: To make sure that services for LaRue County will continue during this slow economy. To insure that funding for our fire departments, conservation district and EMS are available and to maintain the county roads in District 4. Experience: 20 years of Miltary experience including personnel management; Training and experience in conducting vehicle searches; Experience in traffic control including emergency situations; Marksmenship qualified with rifles and handgun; Night tactical experience;Hand-to-hand self-defense techniques; Search and apprehension training

Why Running: I believe we have an issue that is growing in the subject of drugs. I don't think any of us can do enough to eradicate this problem. I believe if there are additional educational programs provided to our youth and possibly an organization such as the Boys and Girls Ranch, maybe we can get an upper hand on this problem.
There is also a problem with theft from farmers and others in the community. Statements should be taken and reports filed so these thieves will be deterred from stealing.

Top Issue Beliefs: Personal appearance standards:
Most of the time, there isn't an appearance that distinguishes the sheriff's department from the local citizens. There should be a set standard for the sheriff's department and the sheriff and deputies should have a neat and distinguished appearance when on duty. They should have uniforms.

State Representative
Michael Lee Meredith Republican

Why Running: I am running because I have seen too many politicians elected who have forgotten who they are, where they came from and who they represent. I will listen to the people of this district and be their voice and vote in Frankfort while trying to make positive changes in this district and throughout our commonwealth.

Top Issue Beliefs: The top issue I will be focusing on is the creation of stable, good paying jobs for hard working people throughout this district. I am pro life, a supporter of our second amendment rights and I believe in smaller government. It is my belief that our state and local governments are the closest to the people that they serve and therefore can serve them best.
