School Board, 5th
Richard Spurling Republican

Profession: Classification Coordinator of Morgan County Corrections Facility for 30 years.

Education: Graduated from Sunbright in 1976

Family: Married to Sandra K. (Walker) Spurling with 2 kids, Justan 27 and Michael 22.

Organizations: Member of TSEA for 27 years.

Experience: None

Why Running: For the kids! I see everyday what happens to someone who doesn't get the education they need. The kids need the best we can provide. Our kids should have the same education opportunity as anyone in the world.

Top Issue Beliefs: These days most parents (both) usually work. Getting the parents back involved in their kids education is a must. Need more after school programs besides sports. Drug awareness programs are needed.

Marion Stanford Other

Profession: Business Owner

Education: Bachelors Degree – Political Science; Graduate studies in History & Law

Family: Married to Mike Hardy, retired insurance executive; 3 sons & 2 grandsons (with another on the way); big sister to 4 brothers & 4 sisters

Organizations: Sunbright United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, Business & Professional Women's Club, American Association of University Women, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Tennessee Master Gardeners

Experience: This would be my first election to public office. For many years I have served by helping to elect other people whom I believed to be worthy of voter's support. I have also held staff positions at both the congressional and gubernatorial level. More importantly, I run a home and a business within a balanced budget. That's a skill all school board members should have.
I am a strong proponent of women in the political process. When women serve in public office, they bring with them the family values and community concerns we all benefit from – not the least of which is the desire for better schools.

Why Running: I am running to serve as a strong voice for Sunbright School. The greatest contribution I can make to my community is to offer my time and skills to that service.

Top Issue Beliefs: The greatest issue facing the Morgan County School Board is the duty to provide as much educational opportunity as possible within the budget available. The challenge will always be to insure the distribution of resources so that all students are equitably served.
